Your stay at Inn at Reading would not be
complete without a 30 minute drive to
neighboring Lancaster County! Often referred to
as Pennsylvania Dutch country, Lancaster County
is best known for its tranquil farmland, covered
bridges, Amish settlements and rich Colonial
history.
Lancaster County can be covered in any direction
in about an hour's drive, making it the perfect
place to explore during your visit. The peaceful
land invites you to take your time and enjoy a
slower pace of life. There's no need to hurry
here! Along the road you may see Amish neighbors
driving horse and buggy, working their fields or
selling wares at many of their fine hand-crafted
gift shops.
The
Amish are deeply devout in their faith and
follow a literal interpretation of the Bible.
They believe in separating themselves from the
world, and most do not use modern conveniences,
such as electricity, cars, or telephones. The
Amish are strongly committed to family and
neighbors. A friendly, but private people, we
ask that you respect their chosen way of life
and also refrain from photographing them (as
photos identifying faces violate their
principles for humility and honoring God). Many
Amish have opened their farms and homes to
public tours, a fascinating way to see life
today as it was in the early 1900's.
In addition to the Amish lifestyle, there are a
variety of fun and romantic things to do in
Lancaster County. History plays a major role in
this land, much of it well preserved. The oldest
Mennonite house is found here, as well as U.S.
President Buchanan's homestead. There are 28
still-standing covered bridges-more than
anywhere in the U.S.! Take an Amish buggy ride,
get a view of the land in a hot air balloon,
treat the kids to an amusement park, explore the Choo Choo Barn Traintown U.S.A.-a train themed
experience for all ages, or take a train ride
through the county on the steam engine Strasburg
Railroad.
You cannot visit Lancaster County without
tasting the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch
cuisine! Many visitors find this the sensory
highlight of their vacation! Traditional recipes
includes chicken pot pie, shoofly pie (molasses
at the bottom of a syrupy coffeecake), chow chow
relish (a multiple vegetable relish), numerous
corn recipes, Schnitz and Knepp entrée (apples,
ham, bread dumplings in sauce) and many other
unique and tasty dishes!
For
a romantic experience visit one of the many
local wineries. Set amid rolling hills of
vineyards, you'll enjoy a reflection of Tuscany
and the chance to watch the sun set while
sipping your favorite wine. Many wineries also
accommodate large groups or weddings.
Don't overlook the opportunity to play a round
of golf in Lancaster County, or spend a day
outdoors hiking, biking, birding and enjoying
nature in the state parks. There are also
numerous museums, antique shops, galleries and
don't miss the Rockvale Square Outlet mall (over
120 stores!) and Dutch Wonderland, a family fun
amusement park!
Lancaster County offers a unique taste of how
life used to be in rural New England. It's the
perfect place to get away, breathe and savor the
pleasure of simplicity, quiet, faith and
old-fashioned family values.
Whatever your interest, a stay at Inn at Reading
is a convenient place to be and we're sure
you'll find our friendly hospitality an
attraction too! |
